What to Expect

What To Expect In Your First Session

In addition to the administrative forms, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire that provides your counselor with more detailed information about the reason you are seeking treatment. This questionnaire includes information about your current situation as well as a brief history.

When you meet with your counselor, the information you provided will be reviewed and together you will decide on a treatment plan. The treatment plan is simply the goal(s) that you want to achieve through counseling.

Also during the first session, it will be decided who should participate in the counseling. Based on your goals, will this be individual, couple, child, or family therapy? It may also be a combination of any of these and may change during the course of treatment as new situations arise and goals are revised. Also based on your goals, it may be determined that an assessment or psychological testing is the appropriate service.

The first session should end with an opportunity for you to ask questions or express concerns. Together with your counselor, you will decide on the next appointment date and time.
